Smart Snacks for Smart Students

No doubt about it--well nourished children learn better.  Here are some good snacks for the classroom.

Packaged foods:
It’s usually cheaper to buy a big bag of a product than individual bags. You can divide a big bag up into smaller portion sizes and make a bag go a long way.
  • Animal crackers
  • Granola bars
  • Cereal bars
  • Whole wheat pretzels
  • Low fat popcorn
  • Trail mix
  • Chex mix
  • Low sugar whole grain cereal (like Cheerios)
  • Raisins
  • Craisins (dried cranberries)
  • Dried apples or apricots
  • Unsweetened applesauce in plastic cups with foil sealed top
  • Cheese and crackers
  • Oatmeal raisin cookies
  • If there are no nut allergies in the class:
  • Peanut butter and crackers
  • Peanuts
  • Almonds
  • Soy nuts
String cheese
  • Cheese cubes
  • Yogurt
  • Milk
Fruits and Vegetables
  • Small apples or pears / If you pack cut fruit, add a splash of orange juice to keep it from browning
  • Banana
  • Mandarin oranges
  • Applesauce
  • Tangerines
  • Bananas Frozen fruit—when it thaws it is delicious / often on sale
  • Baby carrots
  • Celery
  • Sugar snap peas
  • Cherry tomatoes
