Reduce Screen Time
Screen time refers to the amount of time we spend looking at all kinds of screens: TV, DVDs, movies, computers, electronic games, etc. American youth spend on average 56 hours in front of screens each week compared to 30 hours a week in school and 10 hours a week with their parents. Several studies have linked screen time and obesity, including one
that found that the incidence of obesity increased by 6 percent for every
additional hour of television children watched each week. The tween years are a very important time for physical, social and spiritual development. Though some computer and TV time can be valuable, don’t let your kids’ childhood be taken over by screen time. Help them develop a balanced life. Aim for no more than 2 hours of non-homework screen time a day.
The good news is that many families have successfully reduced their screen time. A number of studies have shown that with a little information, families can make these changes pretty easily.
