Cooking with Kids

Cooking with your children is a great way to spend time together.  Teaching your kids to cook is a gift to you and to them. It makes your life easier and gives them a skill for life.  Their future spouses will thank you!

In addition to strengthening feelings of responsibility and confidence, teaching children to cook helps them learn to follow directions and improves math, science and reading skills.  Studies show that involving kids in cooking makes them more likely to try new foods.

Don’t worry if you’re not a great cook.  The We Can! KY recipes are easy and they’ve been table-tested  (More healthy recipes for kids.)  If cooking is new to you, just try one new recipe a week until you build a repertoire of dishes you and your family enjoy.

As kids gain more skills, let them plan a meal and make it on their own.  Do this on a regular basis. For example, once a month the kids are responsible for dinner or Sunday breakfast.  Making meaningful contributions to the family builds confidence and self esteem.
